A Day Without Weather

Never a day with no weather

Wind works over time all the time

But it don’t turn the world

that stopped flowers dropped in the river go

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin under water

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Take forever 22

I’d give all of mine back in time

There’s no deal no appeal no good

no consolation in blue that goes

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin under water

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Stars need no sun to shine

Light just spills like dust

All things fall like in love

how it was when new

Pouring words can’t fill us up

Bring the rain to wash away

Bring the rain to wash away

C’mon rain wash me away and go

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin under water

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin under water

Tumblin Tumblin Tumblin

The images came easily — sorrow, scattering ashes, dropping flowers, empathy, and wishing fueled by tragedy and love for a friend suffering a near-unfathomable loss in tandem with appreciation for Baeley, his grit and bold determination for authentic living without compromise. I wrote this song in memory of Baeley for my friend Kelly.

I interviewed Kelly in November last year and discussed her poetry collection a gift. Last month, poet Greg Luce published a thoughtful review of Kelly’s poetry collection and then. Both collections are poems about the time after Baeley’s time with us, both offer brave transparency of a gamut of emotions offered in frank and powerful bursts. Her work is important and worth reading.

Producer, friend, musician-extraordinaire, and all-around great human, Rich Morey, gets credit for much of Weather’s groove and the evocative singing guitar, as well as mixing and mastering, etc. It’s been a courageous, easy, and inspiring collaboration.

I sometimes like to compare early work to more polished versions and track the evolution of a song or poem. Here is the first rough draft of Weather, posted the week it was drafted and recorded, June 27, 2025, in a wonderful abandoned church in a heat wave in Virginia.

This track might’ve taken many different turns. I like the play I feel in the final version of the chorus, like rolling in the river. I’ve gotten to spend a little time with Baeley’s friends over the past two years. Some things that impress me about them is their great energy, spirit of adventure, and commitment to continue honoring their friend. I share that commitment.

Love this piece, so heartfelt, bringing poetry and song together, as they should be. And it's going to stand (alongside Kelly's moving books) as a powerful testament to Baeley's memory. And to the memory of all who've died too young and gone tumbling, tumbling, tumbling under water.
